I am a senior at the University of Texas at Austin studying for two degrees, one in Bilingual Education and another in Linguistics. I am planning to soon teach a bilingual elementary classroom in Texas.

Qualifications

I have three years of direct tutoring experience and for the past five years have worked with kids in general. Specifically, I have worked for the Austin Independent School District as a tutor and also as site-director of an after-school program. I also served as the primary Math teacher with biweekly classes for elementary-aged children at the River City Youth Foundation in South Austin. I currently teach K-12 computer/technology literacy at this same location.

I have experience working with children with ADHD, literacy issues, and various learning disabilities. I also have three summers worth of experience tutoring and working with talented and gifted children through my work with the Summer Institute for the Gifted and the Center for Talented Youth. If you're looking for an opportunity for your gifted child to be challenged more, I am happy to help!

I am bilingual and biliterate and just finished spending a semester in Mexico where I studied language/culture. In general, I have a passion for language and specifically a love of the Spanish language. I simply love tutoring it.

I am a former computer science major and was awarded the Tracor/Frank W. McBee, Jr., Endowed Undergraduate Scholarship during my computer science studies. While in High School I was an accomplished member of my school's programming team, having placed in many competitions (including one where my team earned the right to travel to Montreal, Canada where myself and two others earned 2nd place in the top devision) and having co-taught an AP level computer science course (myself and another student actually taught the advanced-level course). In general, I have years of experience with computers, the Internet, web-development, and programming (HTML, Javascript, CSS, C, C++, Java, PHP, etc) and have work experience as a web designer/programmer. Basically, whether you want to figure out the finer points of programming or just want to know how to get around on the Internet, I am happy to share my knowledge.

Comments

While many tutors are certainly willing to work with children or adolescents, it is a specialty for me and is something with which I have years of experience.

I work very well with all ages and all levels though and have experience tutoring adults. In general, you will find that I am very patient and am not happy until you feel you truly understand the material. Please give me a try. :)

Personal Statement

I have volunteered literally hundreds of hours helping kids and specifically many hours with the Ministerios de Amor (Ministries of Love) organization in Mexico where I tutored math and English to children in what was akin to an orphanage.

Opportunities for teaching/tutoring have never been just jobs for me, they represent a passion of mine.
