Tips on how to avoid
imitation websites with fraudulent listings and
claims, suspicious offers, and misleading statements:
-
Track a website’s
record of existence. Visit http://www.archive.org,
type in the website’s URL and let it
take you back. The Internet Archive Wayback
Machine is a service that allows people to
visit archived versions of web sites.
Red Flag: The website’s
claims of length of being in business do not
match archived pages.
-
Beware of websites (other
than those of established public companies)
who have been known by several other names
and functions in the past. Chances are they
will be known by a different name and function
in the near future.
Red Flag: A website
known by other names and functions.
-
Beware of websites with
promotional FREE offers which collect credit
card information. The trick is to lure you
into joining them for free, blocking the funds
in your account, and charging your credit
card if you forget to cancel on or prior to
the offer expiration date.
Red Flag: Introductory
FREE offers which require credit card information.
The general rule for Free
offers: You get what you pay for.
Beware of websites with Automatic Membership
Renewals. This is another way to charge your
credit card, if you forget to cancel your
membership. Reliable companies and websites
will provide methods to allow you renew your
membership yourself.

We have outlined a few of
many factors involved when deciding on joining
a membership service. Please use common sense
and care before you join a tutoring service, and
certainly before you disclose your credit card
information. Remember, websites with bells and
whistles don’t necessarily get you results.
What you see on the surface might be different
than what’s inside. Don’t
