Tips on how to avoid imitation websites with fraudulent listings and claims, suspicious offers, and misleading statements:
  • Track a website’s record of existence. Visit http://www.archive.org, type in the website’s URL and let it take you back. The Internet Archive Wayback Machine is a service that allows people to visit archived versions of web sites.
    Red Flag: The website’s claims of length of being in business do not match archived pages.

  • Beware of websites (other than those of established public companies) who have been known by several other names and functions in the past. Chances are they will be known by a different name and function in the near future.

  • Beware of websites with promotional FREE offers which collect credit card information. The trick is to lure you into joining them for free, blocking the funds in your account, and charging your credit card if you forget to cancel on or prior to the offer expiration date.

    Beware of websites with Automatic Membership Renewals. This is another way to charge your credit card, if you forget to cancel your membership. Reliable companies and websites will provide methods to allow you renew your membership yourself.

Please use common sense and care before you join a tutoring service, and certainly before you disclose your credit card information.
